  Doug Wilkes Videos

Over the course of the last few months, I have filmed Doug working on a variety of instruments.

These videos show Dougs incredible skill during the making of several guitars.

Quality components

Shaller

I believe Shaller are making some of the best quality instrument parts available today.

When a customer specifies a tremolo on their custom build, you can not get better than Shaller tremolos.

Doug Wilkes prepairs a new build PRS style guitar for spraying

Doug Wilkes can be seen here talking about a new build PRS style guitar that he is building. It uses maple and Brazilian mahogany in the body, with an ebony figure board and a nice veneered headstock.

This guitar is at the stage of final sanding before the process of spraying, then sanding, spraying, sanding... The key to a beautiful finish spray job is thorough preparation.

Doug Wilkes in his workshop spray booth showing us some instruments he is working on

Doug Wilkes can be seen here in his spray booth showing how hes repaired a Gibson Les Paul, which had its headstock broke clean off. Hes stitched the headstock back on with mahogany and you can see how hes sprayed the neck to match the original colour. The neck is now stronger than when it was made.

Also seen is the PRS style guitar featured in another Doug video, this guitar now is in the process of the final stages of spraying and is being allowed to harden before being polished to a beautiful lustre. The guitar is has been commissioned by Paul Povey

The video also shows a neck Doug has built for guitarist Ray from the band Demon.

Doug Wilkes spraying a guitar with a coat of clear lacquer

Doug Wilkes can be seen here in his spray booth spraying a PRS style guitar with its 16th coat of lacquer. When finished, an instrument built by Doug Wilkes can have up to 20 coats of lacquer and 30 coats or applications of paint depending on the desired finish.

Doug Wilkes talks about a beautiful custom inlay he is creating for a double neck new build guitar

Doug Wilkes can be seen here talking about how he creates a fantastic edge inlay design. The guitar seen here is a custom double neck new build commission by David Fahey.

Davids original brief to Doug was that he wanted to try and replicate the Rex Bogue Double Rainbow twin neck as played by Mahavishnu John McLaughlin.
